The Neutral Tone (轻声)

The unstressed 'fifth tone' that makes speech natural

Category: Tones & Pronunciation

The Rule

The neutral tone (轻声, qīngshēng) is short, light, and unstressed. Its pitch depends on the preceding tone. It commonly appears on grammatical particles, the second syllable of some words, and suffixes like 子/们/的.

Why This Matters

English speakers often over-pronounce neutral tone syllables because English doesn't reduce sounds as drastically. Think of how 'to' in 'going to eat' becomes 'gonna' in casual speech — neutral tone syllables need similar reduction. They should feel like afterthoughts, not full syllables.

Examples

• 妈妈 (māma) — "mom" [Second 妈 is neutral tone — short and light after the 1st tone] • 桌子 (zhuōzi) — "table" [子 is neutral tone — a common noun suffix, never stressed] • 我的 (wǒ de) — "my/mine" [的 as possessive particle is always neutral tone] • 你呢 (nǐ ne) — "and you?" [呢 question particle is neutral tone]

Common Mistakes

❌ Giving 的 a full 4th tone: wǒ dè ✅ Keep 的 light and short: wǒ de → Stressing particles like 的, 了, 吗 sounds very unnatural. They should almost disappear in the flow of speech. ❌ Making neutral tone syllables the same length as toned syllables ✅ Neutral tone syllables should be noticeably shorter → In 谢谢 (xièxie), the second syllable is half the length of the first. Giving both equal time sounds robotic.

Quick Tip

If you're unsure whether a syllable is neutral tone, look it up in a dictionary. Over time, you'll develop intuition for which syllables 'feel' light.
