在 (zài) + Verb — The Progressive Aspect

Expressing actions happening right now

Category: Grammar

The Rule

在 (zài) before a verb indicates an action in progress, similar to English '-ing' form. Often paired with 呢 (ne) at the end for emphasis: 在 + verb + 呢.

Why This Matters

English speakers find this relatively intuitive because it maps to 'is doing / am doing'. '我在吃饭' = 'I'm eating'. The optional 呢 at the end adds a sense of 'currently, at this very moment' — think of it like emphasis. You can also use just 呢 without 在: '我吃饭呢' (I'm eating, you know).

Examples

• 我在看书。(Wǒ zài kàn shū.) — "I'm reading (a book)." [在 before the verb = action in progress] • 他在睡觉呢。(Tā zài shuìjiào ne.) — "He's sleeping (right now)." [在...呢 for extra emphasis on 'right now'] • 你在做什么?(Nǐ zài zuò shénme?) — "What are you doing?" [Very common question — 在 makes it 'right now'] • 外面在下雨。(Wàimiàn zài xià yǔ.) — "It's raining outside." [在 for ongoing weather]

Common Mistakes

❌ 我是看书 for 'I'm reading' ✅ 我在看书 → Chinese doesn't use 是 (to be) + verb for progressive. Use 在 before the verb. 是 is for identity/classification (我是学生 = I am a student). ❌ Using 在 for habitual actions: 我在每天跑步 ✅ 我每天跑步。(No 在 for habits) → 在 is for actions happening NOW. Habits don't need any aspect marker: 我每天跑步 (I run every day). ❌ Using 了 with 在: 我在吃了饭 ✅ 我在吃饭 (progressive, no 了) → 了 marks completion, 在 marks ongoing. They conflict — an action can't be both completed and in progress. Use one or the other.

Quick Tip

在 + verb = '-ing' in English. For emphasis, add 呢 at the end. For questions: 你在做什么呢?(What are you doing right now?)
