只 (zhī) — For Animals and One of a Pair

Birds, cats, dogs, and single items from pairs

Category: Measure Words

The Rule

只 (zhī) is used for most animals (especially small to medium ones: birds, cats, dogs, rabbits, chickens) and for one item from a pair (one hand, one shoe, one ear).

Why This Matters

Most English speakers learn 只 as 'the animal measure word', which is a good starting point. However, large animals like cows and horses use different measure words (头 and 匹). The 'one of a pair' usage is unique to Chinese — English just says 'one shoe', but Chinese emphasizes it's 'a lone item from a set'.

Examples

• 一只猫 (yì zhī māo) — "a/one cat" [Most common small animal measure word] • 两只鸟 (liǎng zhī niǎo) — "two birds" [Birds of all sizes use 只] • 三只狗 (sān zhī gǒu) — "three dogs" [Dogs also use 只] • 一只手 (yì zhī shǒu) — "one hand (of the pair)" [Emphasizes it's a single hand, not both] • 一只鞋 (yì zhī xié) — "one shoe (of the pair)" [Missing shoe — single from a pair]

Common Mistakes

❌ 一只牛 (yì zhī niú) for 'a cow' ✅ 一头牛 (yì tóu niú) → Large livestock (cows, pigs) use 头 (tóu, head), similar to English 'a head of cattle'. 只 is for smaller animals. ❌ 一只马 (yì zhī mǎ) for 'a horse' ✅ 一匹马 (yì pǐ mǎ) → Horses have their own special measure word 匹 (pǐ). It's one of the few animals with a unique classifier. ❌ Using 只 for fish ✅ 一条鱼 (yì tiáo yú) — fish use 条 (long shape) → Even though fish are animals, their long shape takes priority. Shape-based measure words often override category-based ones.

Quick Tip

Small/medium animals = 只. Large livestock = 头. Horses = 匹. Fish/snakes = 条 (long shape wins).

Common Mistakes

Incorrect: 一只牛 (yì zhī niú) for 'a cow' → Correct: 一头牛 (yì tóu niú). Large livestock (cows, pigs) use 头 (tóu, head), similar to English 'a head of cattle'. 只 is for smaller animals.

Incorrect: 一只马 (yì zhī mǎ) for 'a horse' → Correct: 一匹马 (yì pǐ mǎ). Horses have their own special measure word 匹 (pǐ). It's one of the few animals with a unique classifier.

Incorrect: Using 只 for fish → Correct: 一条鱼 (yì tiáo yú) — fish use 条 (long shape). Even though fish are animals, their long shape takes priority. Shape-based measure words often override category-based ones.
