Articles — A, An, The (Chinese Has None)

The most persistent error for Chinese English learners

Category: Articles

The Rule

English requires articles before most singular countable nouns: 'a' (non-specific), 'the' (specific), or zero article (general plurals/uncountable). Chinese uses 一个 (one + classifier) and 那个 (that) differently.

Why This Matters

Chinese has no article system. 这是书 can mean 'This is a book' or 'This is the book' — context decides. English forces you to choose. Chinese speakers consistently drop articles, producing 'I bought book' or 'She is teacher'.

Examples

• She is a teacher. — "她是老师。" [Chinese drops article before professions; English requires 'a'] • I saw the movie you recommended. — "我看了你推荐的那部电影。" ['The' for specific known item — 那 is the closest Chinese equivalent] • Dogs are loyal animals. — "狗是忠诚的动物。" [No article for general plural statements]

Common Mistakes

❌ She is teacher. ✅ She is a teacher. → Professions after 'is/am/are' require 'a/an'. This is one of the most common errors for Chinese speakers. ❌ I want to buy the car. (first mention, unspecified) ✅ I want to buy a car. → First mention of a non-specific noun uses 'a', not 'the'.

Quick Tip

Quick check: Is it a singular countable noun? If yes, it MUST have a/an/the. 'I am student' is ALWAYS wrong — 'I am a student.'
