Conditional Sentences — If Clauses

English conditionals have strict tense rules that Chinese doesn't

Category: Conditionals

The Rule

Zero: If + present, present. First: If + present, will + base. Second: If + past, would + base. Third: If + past perfect, would have + past participle.

Why This Matters

Chinese: 如果...就... with no verb form change. 如果我有钱,我就买车 = 'If I have money, I then buy car.' English requires different verb tenses for real vs hypothetical: 'If I have money' (real) vs 'If I had money' (hypothetical). Chinese speakers mix these up.

Examples

• If it rains, I will stay home. (likely) — "如果下雨,我就待在家。" [First conditional: if + present, will + base] • If I had money, I would buy a car. (hypothetical) — "如果我有钱,我就会买车。" [Second conditional: if + past, would + base] • If I had studied, I would have passed. (past regret) — "如果我学了,我就会通过的。" [Third conditional: if + past perfect, would have + p.p.]

Common Mistakes

❌ If I will have money, I will buy a car. ✅ If I have money, I will buy a car. → Don't use 'will' in the if-clause. English if-clauses use present tense for future conditions. ❌ If I have money, I would buy a car. ✅ If I had money, I would buy a car. → Mixing first and second conditional. 'Would' requires past tense in the if-clause.

Quick Tip

The 'one tense back' rule: real future → present tense in if-clause. Hypothetical present → past in if-clause. Hypothetical past → past perfect in if-clause.
