Articles — A, An, The (Hindi Has None)
The single most persistent grammar error for Hindi speakers
Category: Articles
The Rule
Use 'a/an' for non-specific singular countable nouns (first mention). Use 'the' for specific/known nouns. Use no article for general/uncountable nouns. Hindi has no articles at all.
Why This Matters
Hindi: 'मैं अध्यापक हूँ' (I teacher am). English: 'I am a teacher.' Hindi has no equivalent of a/an/the. Hindi speakers consistently omit articles ('I am teacher', 'Give me book') or add them incorrectly ('I like the music' for general music). This is the #1 error.
Examples
• I am a doctor. — "मैं डॉक्टर हूँ।" [Hindi drops article before profession; English requires 'a'] • Please give me the book. (specific) — "कृपया मुझे किताब दीजिए।" ['The' for specific known item] • Water is essential for life. — "पानी जीवन के लिए ज़रूरी है।" [No article for general/uncountable nouns]
Common Mistakes
❌ He is teacher. ✅ He is a teacher. → Singular countable nouns after 'is/am/are' MUST have an article: 'a teacher', 'an engineer'. ❌ I saw elephant in zoo. ✅ I saw an elephant in the zoo. → Both nouns need articles: 'an elephant' (first mention) + 'the zoo' (specific place).
Quick Tip
Hindi has एक (one) and वह/यह (that/this) which partially map to a/the. Train yourself: every singular countable noun MUST have a/an/the before it. 'I am student' is ALWAYS wrong.
