The Present Simple for Habits vs Estar + Gerund Trap
Don't use continuous tense for habits — English present simple ≠ Spanish estar + gerundio
Category: Tenses
The Rule
English present simple = habits/routines ('I work at a bank'). Present continuous = right now ('I am working'). Spanish 'estoy trabajando' is ONLY 'right now'; don't extend the continuous to habits.
Why This Matters
Spanish speakers sometimes overuse 'I am working at a bank' (meaning permanently) because in Spanish both 'trabajo' and 'estoy trabajando' can describe ongoing situations. In English, 'I am working' implies temporary or right-now action.
Examples
• I work at Google. (permanent job) — "Trabajo en Google." [Present simple for permanent situations] • I am working from home today. (temporary) — "Hoy estoy trabajando desde casa." [Present continuous for temporary situations] • She drinks coffee every morning. — "Ella toma café cada mañana." [Present simple for habits/routines]
Common Mistakes
❌ I am living in Madrid. (permanent) ✅ I live in Madrid. → 'I am living' implies temporary stay. For permanent residence, use 'I live'. ❌ She is working at a hospital. (career) ✅ She works at a hospital. → For her regular job, use present simple. 'Is working' suggests a temporary assignment.
Quick Tip
PERMANENT/HABITUAL = present simple (I live, I work, I study). TEMPORARY/RIGHT NOW = present continuous (I'm living here this month, I'm working on a project).
