Ne...Rien: Saying 'Nothing'
How to express that nothing happened, nothing exists, nothing matters
Category: Negation
The Rule
Ne...rien means 'nothing' or 'not anything.' Rien can be the subject or object: Rien ne marche (Nothing works) or Je ne vois rien (I see nothing).
Why This Matters
English speakers are used to 'nothing' being one word that can go almost anywhere. In French, rien participates in the ne...rien sandwich like other negatives, but it has a special power: it can also be the subject of a sentence (Rien ne...). When rien is the subject, ne follows it directly. This dual behavior doesn't exist in English.
Examples
• Je ne comprends rien. — "I don't understand anything." [rien as object, after the verb] • Rien ne fonctionne. — "Nothing works." [rien as subject — rien + ne + verb] • Il n'a rien dit. — "He didn't say anything." [Passé composé: ne + aux + rien + participle] • Rien n'est impossible. — "Nothing is impossible." [rien as subject with être]
Common Mistakes
❌ Je comprends ne rien. ✅ Je ne comprends rien. → Ne goes before the verb, rien after. Follow the standard sandwich structure. ❌ Ne rien fonctionne. ✅ Rien ne fonctionne. → When rien is the subject, the order is: Rien + ne + verb. ❌ Il n'a dit rien. ✅ Il n'a rien dit. → In compound tenses, rien goes between the auxiliary and the participle (like pas and jamais).
Quick Tip
In compound tenses, rien behaves like pas/jamais — it goes BETWEEN the auxiliary and the participle: n'ai rien fait, n'a rien dit.
In compound tenses, rien behaves like pas/jamais — it goes BETWEEN the auxiliary and the participle: n'ai rien fait, n'a rien dit.
