unless는 'if...not'과 같은 의미로 '~하지 않는 한'을 뜻한다

unless의 기본 의미

unless는 '~하지 않는 한', '~하지 않으면'이라는 뜻입니다. unless = if...not • Unless you hurry, you'll be late. = If you don't hurry, you'll be late. (서두르지 않으면 늦을 거야.) unless 뒤에는 긍정문이 옵니다!

unless + 긍정문 (이중 부정 금지)

unless 자체가 부정의 의미이므로, 뒤에 not을 또 쓰면 이중 부정이 됩니다. ❌ Unless you don't study... (이중 부정!) ✅ Unless you study... (공부하지 않으면) ✅ If you don't study... (같은 뜻) 한국어로 생각하면: unless = '~하지 않는 한' 뒤에 긍정적 조건을 넣으세요.

unless를 쓸 수 없는 경우

unless는 모든 if...not을 대체할 수 있는 건 아닙니다. ❌ 결과가 부정적이지 않을 때: I'll be surprised if he doesn't come. (그가 안 오면 놀랄 거야.) → I'll be surprised unless he comes. (어색함) ❌ 과거 가정(3rd conditional): If I hadn't been there... → Unless I had been there... (거의 안 씀) 💡 unless는 주로 first conditional에서 자연스럽습니다.

unless vs as long as

반대 표현도 알아두면 좋습니다: • unless = ~하지 않는 한 (부정 조건) • as long as = ~하는 한 (긍정 조건) • You can go unless it rains. (비가 오지 않는 한 갈 수 있어.) • You can go as long as it doesn't rain. (비가 안 오는 한 갈 수 있어.) 의미는 같지만 구조가 반대입니다.

지금 출발하지 않으면 버스를 놓칠 거야. — Unless you leave now, you'll miss the bus.

네가 같이 가지 않으면 나 안 갈 거야. — I won't go unless you come with me.

비가 그치지 않으면 경기가 취소될 거야. — Unless it stops raining, the game will be canceled.

매일 연습하지 않으면 실력이 안 늘어. — You won't improve unless you practice every day.

내가 틀리지 않는다면 회의는 3시야. — Unless I'm mistaken, the meeting is at 3.
