Comparatives and Superlatives
English changes adjective forms; Chinese adds 更 and 最
Category: Adjectives
The Rule
Short adjectives: add -er/-est (tall/taller/tallest). Long adjectives: use more/most (beautiful/more beautiful/most beautiful). Irregulars: good/better/best, bad/worse/worst.
Why This Matters
Chinese: 高 (tall), 更高 (more tall), 最高 (most tall) — just add 更/最, never changing the adjective. English has two systems AND irregular forms. Chinese speakers often produce 'more tall' or 'more good' by applying the Chinese pattern.
Examples
• She is taller than her sister. — "她比她姐姐高。" [Short adjective: tall + -er + than] • This is the most expensive restaurant. — "这是最贵的餐厅。" [Long adjective: most + expensive] • He is better than me at chess. — "他下棋比我好。" [Irregular: good → better (not 'more good')]
Common Mistakes
❌ She is more tall than him. ✅ She is taller than him. → One-syllable adjectives use -er, not 'more'. 'More tall' follows Chinese 更 pattern but is wrong in English. ❌ This is the most good option. ✅ This is the best option. → 'Good' is irregular: good → better → best. Never 'more good' or 'most good'.
Quick Tip
1 syllable → -er/-est (big, bigger, biggest). 3+ syllables → more/most (beautiful, more beautiful). 2 syllables → depends (happy→happier, but careful→more careful).
