Continuous Tenses — English Distinguishes Ongoing from Habitual

Hindi रहा and ता both translate differently to English

Category: Tenses

The Rule

Present simple = habits ('I eat rice daily'). Present continuous = right now ('I am eating rice'). Hindi has this distinction (खाता/खा रहा), but Hindi speakers sometimes mix them in English or use continuous for permanent states.

Why This Matters

Hindi: 'मैं खाता हूँ' (I eat — habitual) vs 'मैं खा रहा हूँ' (I am eating — now). This maps well to English. However, Hindi speakers make errors with states: 'I am having a car' (wrong, 'have' is stative) and 'I am living in Delhi' (wrong for permanent residence).

Examples

• I have a car. (possession — state) — "मेरे पास कार है।" ['Have' is stative — NOT 'I am having a car'] • I live in Mumbai. (permanent) — "मैं मुंबई में रहता हूँ।" [Present simple for permanent situation] • I am reading a book right now. — "मैं अभी किताब पढ़ रहा हूँ।" [Continuous for actions happening now]

Common Mistakes

❌ I am having two brothers. ✅ I have two brothers. → 'Have' for possession is stative — can't use continuous. Hindi speakers translate 'मेरे दो भाई हैं' with continuous. ❌ I am knowing the answer. ✅ I know the answer. → 'Know' is stative. Despite Hindi 'मुझे पता है' being a state too, speakers add '-ing' in English.

Quick Tip

Stative verbs that NEVER take -ing: have (possession), know, believe, understand, love, like, hate, want, need, belong, contain. These describe STATES, not ACTIONS.
