Reported Speech — Tense Backshift
English shifts tenses when reporting; Hindi is more flexible
Category: Reported Speech
The Rule
When reporting past speech, English shifts tenses back: 'I am tired' → 'She said she WAS tired'. 'I will come' → 'He said he WOULD come'. Hindi often keeps the original tense.
Why This Matters
Hindi: 'उसने कहा कि मैं थक गया हूँ' (He said that I tired am — original tense kept). English: 'He said he was tired' (tense shifts back). Hindi speakers produce 'He said he is tired' because Hindi allows keeping the original tense in reported speech.
Examples
• She said she was happy. — "उसने कहा कि वह खुश है।" [is → was (backshift after 'said')] • He told me he had finished. — "उसने मुझे बताया कि उसने काम खत्म कर लिया है।" [has finished → had finished] • They said they would come. — "उन्होंने कहा कि वे आएँगे।" [will → would]
Common Mistakes
❌ She said she is tired. ✅ She said she was tired. → After 'said' (past), tense shifts back: is→was. Hindi allows present tense here, English doesn't. ❌ He said he will come. ✅ He said he would come. → will→would after past reporting verb. This is standard backshift.
Quick Tip
Backshift rule: am/is→was, are→were, have→had, will→would, can→could. Apply this automatically after 'said/told/mentioned' etc.
