Tense Consistency — Don't Mix Past and Present
Hindi allows tense flexibility that English strictly prohibits
Category: Tenses
The Rule
In English, maintain the same tense within a narrative. If you start in past tense, continue in past. Hindi is more flexible with tense shifts, especially in storytelling.
Why This Matters
Hindi stories often shift between past and present for vividness: 'वह गया और देखता है कि...' (He went and sees that...). English requires consistency: 'He went and saw that...' Mixing tenses in English sounds confused, not vivid.
Examples
• I went to the store and bought some milk. — "मैं दुकान गया और दूध खरीदा।" [Both verbs in past: went + bought] • She said she was tired. — "उसने कहा कि वह थकी हुई है।" [Reported speech: said + was (backshift)] • Every day, I wake up and brush my teeth. — "हर दिन मैं उठता हूँ और दाँत साफ़ करता हूँ।" [Both in present: wake + brush]
Common Mistakes
❌ Yesterday I go to school and studied hard. ✅ Yesterday I went to school and studied hard. → Both verbs must be past: went + studied. Can't mix 'go' (present) with 'studied' (past). ❌ She told me she is coming tomorrow. ✅ She told me she was coming the next day. → In formal reported speech, backshift tenses: is→was, tomorrow→the next day.
Quick Tip
Pick a tense and stick with it within each paragraph/narrative. Past narrative: all verbs past. Present description: all verbs present. Mixing signals confusion to English listeners.
