관계대명사 완전 정복: 관계대명사 that만 쓸 수 있는 경우

최상급, 서수, all/every/the only 뒤에서는 that만 가능

that이 필수인 상황

보통 who/which/that을 교체할 수 있지만, that만 써야 하는 특별한 경우가 있습니다. 특정 선행사 뒤에서는 which/who 대신 that을 강하게 선호합니다 (문법적으로 거의 필수).

최상급/서수 뒤

• the best/worst/most + 명사 → that This is the best movie that I've ever seen. ❌ the best movie which I've ever seen (어색) • the first/second/last + 명사 → that He's the first person that arrived. She was the last student that left.

all, every, the only, no 뒤

• all: All that glitters is not gold. • every: Every book that I read was useful. • the only: She's the only friend that I trust. • no: There's nothing that can stop me. 이 단어들은 이미 강한 한정을 하므로 which보다 that이 자연스럽습니다.

사람+사물 동시 수식

선행사에 사람과 사물이 함께 올 때도 that을 씁니다. • The people and the places that I remember... (사람+장소이므로 who도 which도 어색 → that) • The actors and movies that she loves... 💡 who는 사람만, which는 사물만이므로, 둘 다 포함하면 that만 가능합니다.
