장소는 where, 시간은 when, 이유는 why로 문장을 연결

관계부사란?

관계부사는 관계대명사처럼 두 문장을 연결하지만, 장소/시간/이유를 나타냅니다. • This is the place. I was born here. → This is the place where I was born. 'here'가 'where'로 바뀌면서 연결됩니다.

where = 장소

when = 시간

why = 이유

• That's the reason why I left early. • I don't understand the reason why she cried. • Tell me the reason why you're late. 💡 why 뒤에는 항상 'the reason'이 선행사로 옵니다. 실제로 'the reason why'에서 why를 생략하는 것이 더 자연스러운 경우가 많습니다: That's the reason I left early.

Examples

Common Mistakes

Incorrect: This is the place which I was born. → Correct: This is the place where I was born.. 장소를 나타내므로 which가 아니라 where(=in which)를 씁니다.

Incorrect: The day where we met was special. → Correct: The day when we met was special.. 시간(day)이므로 where가 아니라 when을 씁니다.

Incorrect: The reason where he left is unclear. → Correct: The reason why he left is unclear.. 이유(reason)이므로 where가 아니라 why를 씁니다.
