TOEIC 문법 정복: 도치 구문

부정어/장소부사/so·neither가 문장 앞에 올 때 주어와 동사(조동사)의 어순이 바뀌는 도치 구문을 이해해야 한다

도치란?

도치(Inversion) = 주어와 동사의 어순이 바뀌는 것 일반 어순: 주어 + 동사 He never missed a deadline. 도치 어순: 부정어 + 동사/조동사 + 주어 Never did he miss a deadline. 왜 도치를 쓰나? → 강조! 문장 앞에 부정어/부사를 놓아 의미를 강조합니다. TOEIC에서는 주로 Part 5/6에서 어순 선택 문제로 출제됩니다. 빈도는 낮지만 나오면 고득점 문제입니다.

부정어 도치

부정어가 문장 앞에 오면 도치: • Never have I seen such a comprehensive report. (이렇게 포괄적인 보고서는 본 적 없다) • Rarely does the CEO attend branch meetings. (CEO가 지점 회의에 참석하는 경우는 드물다) • Seldom has the company faced such challenges. (회사가 이런 도전에 직면한 적은 거의 없다) • Not only did profits increase, but costs also decreased. (이익이 증가했을 뿐 아니라 비용도 감소했다) • Under no circumstances should employees share passwords. (어떤 상황에서도 비밀번호를 공유해서는 안 된다) 핵심: 부정어 뒤에는 의문문 어순(조동사 + 주어)!

so/neither 도치

so/neither 도치: '~도 마찬가지'를 표현 긍정 + so + 조동사 + 주어: • A: I enjoyed the presentation. B: So did I. (나도 그랬어) • The Tokyo office increased sales, and so did the Seoul office. (도쿄 지사 매출이 올랐고, 서울도 마찬가지였다) 부정 + neither + 조동사 + 주어: • A: I didn't receive the email. B: Neither did I. (나도 안 받았어) • The manager wasn't informed, and neither were the employees. (매니저도 통보 못 받았고, 직원들도 마찬가지였다) 주의: So I did. = 네, 그랬어요 (도치 아닌 강조)

장소/조건 도치

장소부사 도치: • Attached is the quarterly report. = The quarterly report is attached. (분기 보고서가 첨부되어 있습니다) • Enclosed are the documents you requested. = The documents you requested are enclosed. (요청하신 서류가 동봉되어 있습니다) 조건절 도치 (if 생략): • Should you have any questions, please contact us. = If you should have... • Were the terms acceptable, we would sign the contract. = If the terms were... • Had we received the notice, we would have attended. = If we had received... TOEIC 이메일 문제에서 Attached/Enclosed 도치는 매우 빈출!

Examples

회사가 한 분기에 이렇게 높은 매출을 달성한 적이 없다. — Never has the company achieved such high revenue in a single quarter.

팀이 마감을 맞췄을 뿐 아니라 목표도 초과했다. — Not only did the team meet the deadline, but they also exceeded the target.

검토를 위해 수정된 제안서를 첨부합니다. — Attached is the revised proposal for your review.

도쿄 지사 매출이 개선됐고, 런던도 마찬가지였다. — The Tokyo office improved sales, and so did the London office.
