Direct Object Pronouns: Le, La, Les, Me, Te, Nous, Vous

Replacing 'it,' 'him,' 'her,' and 'them' — and putting them in the right place

Category: Pronouns

The Rule

Direct object pronouns (me, te, le/la, nous, vous, les) replace the direct object and go BEFORE the conjugated verb.

Why This Matters

In English, object pronouns go after the verb: 'I see HIM.' In French, they go before: 'Je LE vois.' This reversed placement is one of the hardest habits for English speakers to build. You must also choose the correct gendered form: le (him/it masculine), la (her/it feminine), les (them). In English, 'it' has no gender — in French, it does.

Examples

• Je le vois. — "I see him / I see it (m.)." [le = masculine direct object, before the verb] • Tu la connais ? — "Do you know her?" [la = feminine direct object] • Il les a achetés. — "He bought them." [les = plural, before auxiliary; participle agrees] • Elle me regarde. — "She's looking at me." [me = first person direct object] • Je ne le vois pas. — "I don't see him." [Pronoun stays before the verb, inside ne...pas]

Common Mistakes

❌ Je vois le. ✅ Je le vois. → Direct object pronouns go BEFORE the conjugated verb in French, not after. ❌ J'ai les achetés. ✅ Je les ai achetés. → In compound tenses, the pronoun goes before the auxiliary (ai), not between auxiliary and participle. ❌ Je le vois pas. (forgetting ne) ✅ Je ne le vois pas. → In formal/written French, ne comes before the pronoun: ne + pronoun + verb + pas.

Quick Tip

Before a vowel, le and la become l': 'Je l'aime' (I love him/her). Les does not contract: 'Je les aime.'

Before a vowel, le and la become l': 'Je l'aime' (I love him/her). Les does not contract: 'Je les aime.'
