The Pronoun Y: Replacing Places and 'À + Thing'
A tiny word that replaces entire prepositional phrases
Category: Pronouns
The Rule
Y replaces à/en/dans/sur/chez + a place, or à + a thing (not a person). It goes before the conjugated verb.
Why This Matters
English has no equivalent of y. When a French speaker says 'J'y vais' (I'm going there), English speakers wonder where this mysterious 'y' came from. Y replaces any place you've already mentioned, or the complement of verbs that take à + thing (penser à quelque chose → j'y pense). It's incredibly common — 'il y a' (there is) contains y!
Examples
• Tu vas à Paris ? — Oui, j'y vais demain. — "Are you going to Paris? — Yes, I'm going (there) tomorrow." [y replaces à Paris] • Elle pense à son avenir. — Elle y pense souvent. — "She thinks about her future. — She often thinks about it." [y replaces à son avenir] • Il y a trois chats dans le jardin. — "There are three cats in the garden." [il y a = there is/are (fixed expression)] • Nous y habitons depuis cinq ans. — "We've lived there for five years." [y replaces the place mentioned earlier]
Common Mistakes
❌ Je vais y. (at the end) ✅ J'y vais. → Y goes BEFORE the conjugated verb, not after. ❌ J'y pense à Marie. ✅ Je pense à Marie. → Je pense à elle. → Y replaces à + things/places, NOT à + people. For people, use stressed pronouns (à elle, à lui). ❌ Je y vais. ✅ J'y vais. → Je + y = j'y (elision before vowel sound).
Quick Tip
Y = there (for places) or about it/to it (for things with à). Never use y to replace a person — use stressed pronouns instead (à lui, à elle).
