Past Participle Agreement with Preceding Direct Objects
The trickiest agreement rule in French — even native speakers get it wrong
Category: Past Tenses
The Rule
When using avoir, the past participle agrees with the direct object ONLY if that object comes before the verb (as a pronoun, in a relative clause, or in a question).
Why This Matters
This rule trips up even advanced learners and many native French speakers. With avoir, normally there is no agreement. But when the direct object appears before the verb — usually as a pronoun (la, les, que) — the participle must agree with that object. This never happens in English, making it particularly counterintuitive.
Examples
• La pomme que j'ai mangée était délicieuse. — "The apple (that) I ate was delicious." [que refers to la pomme (feminine) → mangée] • Je les ai vues hier. — "I saw them (f.) yesterday." [les = feminine plural → vues] • Quelle robe as-tu choisie ? — "Which dress did you choose?" [quelle robe (f.) precedes → choisie] • J'ai mangé la pomme. — "I ate the apple." [NO agreement: direct object comes after → mangé (no -e)]
Common Mistakes
❌ La lettre que j'ai écrit. ✅ La lettre que j'ai écrite. → Que replaces la lettre (feminine) and precedes the verb — agree the participle: écrite. ❌ Les fleurs ? Je les ai acheté. ✅ Les fleurs ? Je les ai achetées. → Les (= les fleurs, feminine plural) precedes the verb — agree: achetées. ❌ J'ai mangée la pomme. ✅ J'ai mangé la pomme. → When the direct object follows the verb, there is no agreement with avoir.
Quick Tip
The shortcut: with avoir, only check for agreement when you see la/les/l'/que/quels/quelles BEFORE the past participle. If the object is after? No agreement needed.
