The Rule
The imparfait describes past habits, ongoing states, descriptions, and background actions. Form it from the nous stem of the present tense + endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
Why This Matters
English doesn't have a separate tense for this — 'I ate' and 'I used to eat' and 'I was eating' are all handled by the imparfait in French. English speakers often default to passé composé for everything, but using the imparfait correctly is what makes your French sound natural rather than robotic.
